Noreen discovered Somatics when she had both upper and lower back pain, achy legs, painful feet, tight shoulders, and numbness in her arms…symptoms that all manifested during a particularly stressful time in her life. She initially sought the help of a chiropractor, starting with several times a week, with some relief, but new pains kept emerging. She began getting deep tissue massages once a week in an effort to relieve her discomfort, but again, found the relief to be very temporary. It was with frustration that she finally told a massage therapist about her lack of ability to achieve physical comfort, and he handed her the book, Somatics Reawakening the Mind's Control of Movement, Flexibility and Health, by Thomas Hanna. She read the book and it made perfect sense to her - our brain responds to the day-to-day stress of life by contracting muscles, and when muscles become chronically contracted, we experience tension, aches and pain. She did the exercises outlined in the book and experienced immediate relief. She went online to find out more about Somatics, and found they were offering their first East Coast training.

Noreen has a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Education. Her teaching experience was with adult learners. Her working background was diverse, including working with people who were physically and/or mentally disabled; volunteering for Sexual Assault Support Services emergency Hotline and Seacoast Mental Health. In Hanna Somatics, Noreen found everything she wants in her lifes' work - teaching, and empowering others. Through Hanna Somatic workshops or individual sessions, students learn how to regain comfort and control their own health.

Noreen began her training at the Somatic Systems Institute in Northampton, Massachusetts in the spring of 2002. The Institute offers a three year training program broken down into three parts - one month the first year, and three weeks the following two years. After the first month-long training, she immediately began her Practice. Her first client had experienced back pain for 15 years, after falling off his boat. He had been seeing chiropractors regularly, without permanent relief. After just four sessions, he was pain free and has remained so since. Her second client had experienced back pain for 50 years, after being thrown from a horse at the age of seventeen. Since that time, she had three back operations, without relief, and was now receiving shots for pain every three months. After three sessions, she was pain free, and has remained so since. Each individual session is concluded by teaching movements that will continue to expand the flexibility and comfort of her clients. The movements are slow and gentle, and she has found them to be invaluable to her clients and to herself in terms of increasing comfort and flexibility, and reversing and preventing aches and pains. Since her second year of advanced training in Somatics, Noreen has shifted her focus to Workshops, to reach a larger population - especially those with back and back related problems. Although Hanna Somatics has been practiced out in California since the first training and research facility opened in 1975, it has only recently come to the East Coast. The feedback she has received on her Workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, and has validated her conviction that Hanna Somatics will have a significant effect on participants and on reducing Health Care costs.
